A First Dolls House - Ready Built, Kit or Plan?
There are three ways to acquire a dolls house.
- Buy a ready build dolls house. This can be a wooden shell where you add your own doors, paper, floor lights and so on, or it can be a completed dolls house and all you have to do is add the furniture. Obviously the more work you do yourself the cheaper the house will be. A house can be commissioned and built to your specification or you may choose a standard design “off the shelf” that fits what you have in mind.
- Buy a flat pack kit house. All the pieces arrive in a box with clear instructions for assembly. Most kits are fairly easy to put together with a few basic tools, a good wood glue and some panel pins. There are kits available for most sizes and period houses.
- Build your own dolls house. Building a dolls house from a plan is not really recommended if it is your first house or you have never attempted wood work since leaving school. The advantage of building your own house is that you get exactly what you want and do not have to compromise at all. Dolls house plans can be bought from good hobby shops or downloaded from the internet or they may be designed by yourself
