Edwardian Dining Room

Edwardian dining rooms were formal rooms. Eating and drinking were serious occupations. Dining rooms walls tended to be painted or covered with striped wallpaper or wood panelling. Colours were warm and rich in shades of red, brown, green and russets. A thick rug might have been laid on the floor. Oil paintings and china collections would be displayed on the walls. Jacobean, Elizabethan and Queen Anne style furniture was deemed appropriate in the dining room with Chippendale and Sheraton reproduction chairs with leather upholstered, horsehair stuffed seats. For those homes favouring a more modern feel Arts & Crafts and William Morris style furniture was popular. Here, chairs might be made from light oak with rush seats,

Tables came in all shapes and sizes. Traditionalists opted for Charles I dark oak tables with bulbous legs or heavy refectory tables. Gate leg tables were common if space was at a premium.

Other items of dolls house dining room furniture might include: -

  • Sideboards with fixed candelabras at either side
  • Oak dressers or William Morris sideboards
  • Corner cupboards for storing table linen, china, crockery and glassware
  • Side tables for serving food
  • Electric wall lights
  • Candlesticks on the table itself
  • The most modern houses might have had electric table lighting which would be hidden amongst floral displays
