Ann High's Carved & Painted Medieval, Tudor & Arts & Crafts Miniatures
  
I have always made things in miniature. I also worked in a dramatic scale
when I worked in the theatre. I discovered the dollshouse world through the
early days of the London Dollshouse Festival and was inspired to make a
large Tudor Wealden house after seeing the work of the late Bryan Poole.
After spending many a happy hour making the furniture I exhibited it all at
the LDF and was encouraged to go further.
Then followed a sharp learning curve to hone my skills, getting miniature
equipment and teaching myself to use it with competence. I explored
different woods and wood finishes, sourced hinges and did lots of research
into the specialised furniture I wanted to make. I taught myself to carve,
my favourite carving tool being a simple , but very sharp scalpel. I
learned how to hand turn on a miniature and a full sized lathe. Carving and
turning are what I most enjoy.
I have a large library of reference books and always travel with a camera to
take pictures of furniture, buildings, floors, ceilings and walls. My photo
albums are a little unusual!
I take particular care with the finish on my furniture, it has to look and
feel good.
I love doing the historical research. Many of my pieces have an interesting
tale attached to them, which I delight in telling at fairs! On a trip to a
Paris museum I could be found crawling on the floor under the beautifully
carved Cluny Table with my husband, me with the tape measure, him the note
book. We had an interesting conversation with a couple from the US doing
the same! I am particularly interested in the Medieval and Tudor periods
and have also begun to make Arts and Crafts furniture as this was influenced
by the medieval styles. Other periods up to 17th Century also have some
beautiful carved furniture which I shall also enjoy making.
I make in both 1/12th scale and 1/24th. Carving in the smaller scale is a
challenge I really enjoy and has really improved my skill.
I make and source accessories as these can be difficult to find for the
earlier periods and for 1/24th scale.
I also make houses and room boxes in both scales. Each one an original. I
accept commissions.
