The Servants Bedroom

Servants were usually relegated to living in the attic or the basement, close to the kitchen. Furniture and decoration were basic and strictly functional. Furniture might include:-
- A single iron bedstead with horsehair mattress
- Wooden chair
- Table
- Chest
- Wardrobe
- Other items no longer fashionable in the rest of the house.
More sympathetic employers wishing to make their staff a little more comfortable (or servants of a higher standing such as butlers or housekeeping might enjoy the following privileges:-
- Hip bath
- Vase and flowers
- Picture or religious text
The servants attic rooms tended to be kept for higher ranking servants including valets and butlers. The furniture may be ill fitting or no longer fashionable. Personal items might include a pitcher and bow, shaving mirror, traveling writing set, hot water bottle, pictures and traveling trunk.
