A Lady’s Boudoir

The lady’s boudoir was a private feminine room into which a lady might retire by herself or with a few close friends. She would be likely to indulge in “feminine pursuits” – drawing, painting, poetry and letter writing, embroidery, sewing, reading or crafts. As sewing machines became more common, there might be one in a corner of this room used for making dresses and curtains.

Decoration was romantic and feminine. The Roccoco style would be appropriate in this room.  Furniture varied according to the size and function of the room. It might include:-

  • Soft upholstered chairs
  • Sofa or chaise longue
  • Footstools
  • Sewing box and sewing machine
  • Display cabinets
  • Small tables
  • Wall shelves
  • Small writing desk
  • Dressing table

  • An easel with a painting and artistic drape
