A Gentleman’s Dressing Room

 

This was often adjoining the master bedroom and connected via an interconnecting door. A key would remain on the bedroom side of the door allowing a lady to maintain some privacy.

The dressing room would be furnished simply in a masculine style. Depending on it’s size, it might be used for napping, writing correspondence or a pre-dinner drink after dressing. The only other person likely to need to access this room would be the gentleman’s valet.

A gentleman might have a bed in his dressing room to be used when returning late from his club, business meeting or dinner that he had attended unaccompanied.  Other furniture might include a freestanding wardrobe, a dressing mirror, a comfy chair and a wash stand with shaving set. All these pieces were likely be fashioned from dark woods. Wallpapers and floors would also be in dark tones with matching masculine curtains and drapes. Turkish rugs were appropriate
