Jane Grey (1537 – 1554)Although contentiously a Tudor monarch, Lady Jane Grey has been included for completion and background. Lady Jane Grey never wanted to be Queen. She was an unfortunate puppet of her ambitious parents Frances Brandon and Henry Grey, and John Dudley, father of her husband. Dudley was anxious for a Protestant monarch to remain on the throne. After Edward’s death in 1553, Jane was proclaimed Queen of England. However, Mary, the rightful heir to the crown of England underHenry VIII's will, was gathering support in Suffolk. She and her followers rode into London nine days later and imprisoned Jane and her supporters. Mary was the next Queen of England. Jane Grey was not executed until a second uprising occurred in her name. |
