Edward VI (1537 – 1547)Henry VIII died in 1547, having finally produced Edward, the necessary male heir. Unfortunately, the boy was both young and sickly. When he was pronounced king his uncle Edward Seymour became Lord Protector. Seymour sought to control England through Edward. Later Seymour was overthrown by the Duke Of Northumberland who took control as Edwards Chief Advisor. Protestants in England were pleased to have Edward as King. They worried about Edward’s successor. Mary, Henry VIII’s eldest daughter was next in line to the throne and would return England to Roman Catholicism. Various members of the nobility plotted to bring Henry’s other daughter, Elizabeth to the throne, others rallied behind Lady Jane Grey, a relation of Henry VIII’s sister Mary |
