How To…Hang Wall Paper Inside Your Dolls House.

The wallpaper that you choose will greatly influence the final appearance of a dolls house room. For example a dark or heavily patterned wallpaper will make a room look smaller and darker. If you are trying to create a private, masculine room this might be exactly what you are looking for. If however, you are trying to get a room to look bigger, pale and plain papers are better as they allow more light to reflect from them. Similarly, vertical stripes will make a room look taller whilst horizontal stripes will make a room look wider.

If your dolls house is to be decorated in a late Victorian style, you may find yourself using one type of paper between the skirting board and the dado rail and another kind between dado and picture rail.

It’s usually easiest to begin decorating in the ground floor rooms and work your way up. If your house is to be lit, the electric’s should be installed first. Wires should be slotted into grooves to keep them flush to the wall. They can be held in place with masking tape.

Pain the ceiling. Household emulsion will do this job well, water down a little and apply an extra coat if the paint is to thick. Look for heritage shades of off white in tester pots to avoid a “bright white” ceiling.

It may also be helpful to have fixed the flooring in before papering the walls.

  • Measure the length and height of the walls. This helps you to calculate how many sheets of wall paper you will need.
  • Wallpapers with patterns will need to be matched to allow some excess to help with this.
  • If you are planning to paper the opening wall allow extra for this in your calculation.
  • Adjust your measurements if you are using two papers or part paper, part paint effect.
  • Buy a little extra paper in case you make a mistake
  • Cut the paper to size. If you are applying two papers, pencil a dado and picture rail  line around the walls so you have something to work to. The dado should be 4.4 inches off the ground and the picture rail one inch below the ceiling.
  • Cut one piece of wall paper for each wall, using a metal ruler to get a straight edge and sharp paper scissors to cut cleanly and accurately.
  • When using two papers the top paper should overlap the bottom paper to ensure that there are no gaps.
  • Mix up normal wallpaper paste or use dolls house wallpaper paste if preferred. Apply one layer of paste to each wall and allow to dry. This acts as a preparatory layer.
  • Once the first layer of wallpaper paste is dry, add a second layer to the wall. Do not apply paste to the paper, this can make it become overly wet and rip.
  • Slide the paper into it’s correct position and use a ruler or other flat implement to smooth the bubble and creases out of the paper. Ensure that the corners are glued down securely.
  • Leave for a few hours to dry.
  • Cut and fit all wooden architecture, skirtings, dado, picture rail, cornices, architrave and lintels.
