…Build Your Own Dolls House  - Getting Started

Once you have chosen the era that you would like your dolls house to be representative of and you have chosen the scale that you would like to work in, it’s time to commit your ideas to paper. Make a series of scaled diagrams showing front, back and side elevations, as well as floor plans for each storey. This process helps you to clarify in your mind how the finished dolls house will look and will iron out any planning errors.

If you are making a house from a design of your own and not from an existing suppliers dolls house plan, have you thought about the following:-

  • How will the house open?
  • How will the roof connect to the house?
  • Have you designed plenty of room for the stairs? A dolls house needs to be at least fifteen inches deep to accommodate a 1/12th scale standard straight staircase.
  • Are the rooms large enough to fit all the furniture they will need? Are they so deep that furniture at the back can’t be seen clearly?
  • Will the house be lit?
  • Will you make doors, windows, chimneys etc or will you buy these ready made?
  • Do you have a designated space in your own house that will accommodate the house that you are building?

Once you have a drawn your house design onto graph paper, you need to transfer these designs onto brown paper or newspaper. They should be full size and will act as templates and help you to calculate the amount of wood that you will need to build the shell of your dolls house
