….Build A Dolls House  - Fitting Windows

This article has been written to be read after …Build A Dolls House – Fitting The Doors.

Windows are like doors in that your choice of window style really depends on the style, era and grandeur of your dolls house. Most window frames consist of a number of vertical strips with horizontal cross bars between them. Some windows are glazed with sheet glass, others with leaded panes.

Many windows can be shop bought, this is particularly useful if you want to include opening sash windows or complicated bay windows. In these cases you just cut window holes to the manufacturers specified sizes and slot the window frames into the holes.

Window panes can be cut from acrylic sheets, Perspex or transparencies for overhead projectors. The latter is particularly flexible, inexpensive, scales well to the thickness of glass and can be super glued in place easily.

To make windows:-

  • Create a template for you windows by holding a sheet of card behind each window hole and drawing round the hole outline accurately.
  • Place the shape onto Perspex, acrylic or transparency and cut out the window pane. Do not glue it in place yet.
  • Test the cut out pane against the window hole and trim to fit if necessary.
  • Cut a series of small, narrow, thin strips of wood and stain or paint as necessary
  • Place wooden strips around the edge of the window hole. It is best to fit the two vertical sides first and put the top and bottom cross pieces next.
  • Add more wooden strips to build the eventual shape of your windows
  •  Once the frames are completed, attach the panes behind them. Their outlines will eventually be hidden by curtains or blinds.
