….Build A Dolls House - Adding The Roof

This article has been written to be read after …Build A Dolls House – Fitting Windows.
The roof can be made from thinner wood than the walls because you will strengthen it will tiles later on.
- Fit a ridge pole between the two highest points of the side walls. This is the highest point of the roof.
- Add two strips of beading, one along the front of the house and one along the back.
- If you are lighting your house be sure to leave a gap in the back beading to allow the light wires to feed down to the socket set
- Cut two wooden triangles the same size and shape as the eaves and glue these to the inside of the outer walls to add more strength
- Add any room dividers at this stage.
- Cut and fit the back roof first. It should overlap the side and back walls slightly.
- When fitting the front of the roof give some thought to the front opening wall. This can be overcome by running a strip of wood along the front of the house so the opening doors do not crash into the roof and by preventing the roof overhanging too far.
- If the roof is to be fixed this can be done now with glue and screws. Do not be too worried if the roof does not meet neatly at the top, this will be disguised with tiles later on.
- If the roof is to open, it can either be hinged to the ridge pole, or it can be hooked over the back roof using a piece of “L” shaped beading running along the top of the front roof. Magnets can be fixed into the interior tops of the side walls and sunk into the roof to make a sturdy connection.
- Alternatively fix a bead frame inside underneath the front roof that fits neatly inside the attic opening and wedges the roof in place. The roof can easily be removed by lifting up by the overhang
