Hepplewhite Furniture

George Hepplewhite (d. 1786) was an English  cabinet maker and furniture designer. He was one of the big three along with Thomas Sheraton and Thomas Chippendale. His work is typified by elegant curved lines, painted and inlaid with satinwood, beechwood and mahogany.

  • Furniture legs were slim, tapered, and could be plain, fluted or reeded
  • Motifs used in decoration included ribbons, rosettes, ears of corn, lyres and Prince Of Wales feathers
  • Chair backs in shields, ovals, ladders, hearts and wheels
  • Spade foot
  • Incorporation of Robert Adams’ designs

Hepplewhite made ornamental furniture available to the less wealthy home owners. His designs were known for their solid craftsmanship and construction. There are no pieces of furniture made directly by Hepplewhite or his firm in existence. His name is associated with a particular style of light and elegantly designed furniture designed between 1775 and 1800. Reproductions of his pieces were produced through the following centuries
