Georgian Library

Originally books were extremely expensive and relatively rare. This meant that they were not kept in special rooms but locked up. By the Georgian era however some households did have private libraries. These libraries were solely for the use of the individual owner and certainly not for general consumption. As people started to read for pleasure and as knowledge and learning became highly sought after, the idea of a separate reading room became increasingly attractive. By the 1750’s a library was included in many housing plans.

Georgian houses often acquired their library in on ongoing fashion, acquiring bits of furniture from other rooms in the house. They picked up an eclectic feel. The library became a room where knowledge could be acquired and not just from books. Scientific toys and gadgets might be displayed here, telescopes, microscopes and globes were all commonplace. Other features of a Georgian library that you might want to include in your dolls house might include:-

  • Billiard table (very exclusive and expensive)
  • Chandeliers
  • Family portraits or oil landscapes
  • Classical statues
  • Side tables displaying scientific objets

By the Regency period, the library was a far more comfortable room, with easy chairs, good lighting and side tables.
