Georgian HallBy the Georgian era, the hall had diminished in area and function. In terrace houses it was little more than a connecting space between the front door and other rooms. It served as a reception space for servants and led through to an ante room for more prestigious visitors. In larger houses it was still used for entertaining, parties and dinners. A fanlight over the front door would allow natural light into the hallway. The central staircase in the house would probably lead up out of this hallway and would be a feature in its own right. If your dolls house is very grand, then the hallway should be decorated in a very grand style to reflect the rest of the house. Guests arriving for the first time would be impressed by high ceilings, domes in the roof, columns, alcoves and niches containing statues and busts carved out of fine materials, including marble, alabaster or bronze. Through the course of the Georgian era, the other reception rooms grew in status and this led to the demise of the hallway’s function. In Georgian terrace houses it might have been little more than a corridor. |
