Pilasters

Pilasters illustrate the influence of Classical architecture on Georgian buildings. Pilasters are flat columns attached to the (front) wall of a building. They were first introduced by the Ancient Greeks who built their pilasters entirely from stone and positioned them infront of a building, enabling people to walk all the way around them.

By the eighteenth century stone was an extremely expensive building material. One way to make a building look like it had columns without having to pay for them was to attach pilasters to the wall.
