The Reign Of George I (1714 – 1727)
In many respects George I was a totally unsuitable King of England. He couldn’t speak English and spent most of his reign living in Germany.
Luckily, his administrators were very competent and controlled affairs well in his absence. Sir Robert WalpoleSir Robert Walpole, the first prime minister, was a member of the House of Commons, and a key Whig party member. He managed to make and lose vast sums of money both privately and for the country out of the slave traffic of South America. He was successful and became the most powerful Whig, often presiding over meetings of other ministers. Sir Robert surrounded himself with an entourage that would develop into the Cabinet. The term “Prime Minister” was first used by his opponents as an insult and gradually slipped into everyday speak. |
