18th Century Furniture

Furniture in the eighteenth century was sparse. Even the wealthy would be unlikely to own masses of possessions. However, they would not be worried that others would think them too poor to be able to afford furniture. They believed that people of taste would recognize that chic and simple indicated the best possible taste!

Horse hair chairs, tables beds and sideboards were all fairly ubiquitous pieces in the eighteenth century. Colours were deemed either masculine or feminine and colours would be chosen for a room depending on the masculine or feminine nature of it's function.

As Georgian moved over to make room for Regency style, informality prevailed. with informality came increased simplicity. Sofas became fashionable as did carpet, wallpaper and oil lamps
