Neo-Classicism, Classicism & Romanticism

Classicism

“Classicism” characterizes work that emphasizes the qualities traditionally associated with ancient Greek and Roman art. It is concerned with reason, balance, objectivity, and restraint. It is diametrically opposed to “Romanticism,” which was individual and expressive. Many architects and artist show elements of both Romanticism and Classicism in their work.

Classicism was a dominant trend, during the Renaissance and again in the Neo-classical periods. It was influenced by Ancient Art and was a rebellion against the flourishing Rococo style and the embellished Baroque style.

Neo-Classicism

Neo-classicism has come to represent a trend of European and Amerian architecture that prevailed in the early nineteenth century. It is characterized by the use of:-

  • Greek orders and decorative motifs
  • simple geometric composition
  • light colours and shades
  • shallow relief and decoration
  • lack of textural effect

Neo-classicism ran in parallel to Louis XVI  style furniture in France. For this reason the two furniture styles appear similar. Louis XVI furniture would be appropriate in a dolls house furnished in a Neo-classical style

There are four main variations or phases of Neoclassicism:-

  • Federalist - Especially common in New England; a traditional approach to classicism, influenced by English models. Charles Bulfinch, Samuel MacIntyre.
  • Idealist - Linked to symbolic Roman models.
  • Rationalist - Emphasized structure and classical building techniques, such as stone vaulting and domes
  • Greek Revival (1818-1850) - The first truly national style in the United States.

Romanticism

Around 1800, Romanticism emerged as a reaction against Neoclassicism. It did not replace the Neoclassical style, but instead acted as a counter-balance.

If you are wishing to add a neo-classical feel to your dolls house look for the following:-

  • Paintings of classical scenes – temples, Roman feasts, Historical ruins set in landscapes, mythological and biblical stories, cherubs, angels,
  • Furniture by Sheraton, Hepplewhite and the lesser known but equally prolific Chambers and Stuart
  • Tables with pillar or column style legs
  • Turned and ribbed chair legs
  • Marble, gilt and polished fine grain woods
