Art Nouveau SculptureDuring the nineteenth century there was an increasing demand for small scale sculpture to be displayed in the home. Art Nouveau sculptors responded to this integrated artistic environment and also to the idea that all household objects should be aesthetically pleasing regardless of their function. In addition to small statuettes they also produced chimney surrounds and light fixtures. Art Nouveau sculptors drew on the same influences as other art forms but nowhere was the female form so popular. Mystical maidens, nymphs and sulty temptresses were portrayed in every possible way. Loie Fuller was an American Entertainer established at the Folie Bergere. She was a great source of inspriration for many scupltors including Larche who made several sculptural lamps based on her form. The Austrian sculptor Gustav Gurschner followed the trend for smaller pieces. He produced household objects including door knockers, candlesticks, mirrors and lamps, all modelled on young women and cast in bronze. |
