The Legacy Of Art Nouveau

Art Nouveau was a short lived movement. By the outbreak of World War One, in 1914, it was in decline. As it became more popular it became commercially exploited, compromised on quality and taste and the best artists lost interest and moved on to other things. Their work had become too expensive and unsuitable for mass production.

The movement was never popular or widespread. In Britain it was criticised for being decadent and bizarre. However, it did clear the outdated ideas of the nineteenth century to help pave the way for modern art of the twentieth centrury. Van de Velde founded a school that later became the Bauhaus, the most famous school of art, architecture and  modern design.

Today the work of some of the greatest craftsmen of the Art Nouveau movement raises huge sums of money and is sought by collectors worldwide
