An Introduction To Art Nouveau

Art Nouveau flourished at the turn of the nineteenth century. The movement spread from Paris and Vienna to the UK to Chicago. It can be seen in houses, objets d’art, posters, furniture, glass, ceramics, jewellery metalwork and sculpture.

Art Nouveau was initiated and developed by a group of architects and designers who reacted against the academic art of the time. Samuel Bing was an art developer who opened La Maison de l’Art Nouveau to sell new art.

Art Nouveau is decorative rather than functional. It is typified by the sinous “whiplash line.” Shapes and patterns inspired by all things natural, exotic birds and plants, reptiles and young women with long flowing hair.
