Art Nouveau GlassA glass exhibition held in Paris in 1884 demonstrated the work of several glass makers who experimented with new effects, including cloudy, aerated and crackled glass. They were influenced by the markings that they found on pieces of quartz, crystals and stone in the natural world. This style is typified in the work of Galle, a son of a luxury glass ware and ceramic manufacturer in France. Galle had an extensive knowledge of botany and zoology created pieces of decorative glass based on the natural shapes that he saw in plants, reptiles and sea creatures. He used new effects such as colouring glass, carving etching and decorating with enamels and metallic foils. Across in the US, Louis Comfort Tiffany the son of the famous jeweller Tiffany in New York, had completed his training as a painter in Paris. Tiffany worked first as an interior designer and later established his own glass company. He was another great innovator experimenting with new colour techniques and inventing new processes including lustre, iridescence and opalescence. Tiffant was less abstract than Galle and also created functional glassware including vases and lampshades. |
