Art Nouveau Ceramics

Art Nouveau ceramics made less impact than other Art Nouveau household accessories and this medium lacked an outstanding champion. Studio potters explored innovative techniques including crackle, crystalline, and metallic glazes.

Others experimented with different types of clay and naturalistic shapes such as vegetables and animals. Large ceramic producers concentrated their efforts on painting Art Nouveau effects onto pots.

Ernest Chaplet was a French potter who was attracted to the Art Nouveau movement. He was discovered the formula for sang-de-boeuf, a deep red Chinese glaze. Chaplet was trained at the factory in Sevres and had technical expertise. He helped the artist Gaugin to make pots with Art Nouveau characteristics.

In the UK the Martin Brothers in Fulham and later Southall produced the most inventive At Nouveau pottery. They experimented with both clays and glazes and produced salt glazed saltware decorated with birds, animals and masks
