Art Deco TextilesThe role of fabrics, wallpapers and rugs grew in the inter war years. They were often the only sources of decoration and colour in peoples homes. The following (garish) colours were popular during the Art Deco period:-
A new colour conservatism did emerge during the late 1920’s and interior design began to take on more neutral colours, charcoal grey, bottle green and a shade of brown known as tete de negre. As colours lost their vividity, texture became more important. Printed fabrics were abandoned to make way for quality woven fabrics. Varied weaves became popular and unusual materials such as raffia were more widespread. As synthetic fibres developed the quality of scope of weaving changed again. Synthetic fabric could simulate natural expensive fabrics like linen, wool and silk. PatternPatterns fell into two camps
Geometric patterns were often comprised of overlapping blocks or abstract images. Flowers might be combined with animal images. |
