Art Deco Painting

It is difficult to define a precise style of Art Deco painting and so this article concentrates on the artwork of the 1920’s that captures the essence of Art Deco.

Art Deco artists tended to draw on influences and themes popularized by Modernist artists. Jean Dupas is an example of this type of Art Deco painting.

Tamara de Lempicka represents Art Deco painting truly. Born in Poland, married to a Russian and living in Paris after the Great War de Lempicka developed a unique style. Angular images and bright vivid colours can be found in over one hundred portraits that she did between the wars. Other subject matter included nudes and painting set against the backdrop of New York.

Oher Art Deco artists include:-

  • Louis Icart – multi medium, women
  • Rene Buthaud – multi medium, included stained glass and ceramics
  • Tamara de Lempicka – portraits
  • Paul Jouve - animals
  • Raphael Delorne – subjects in architectural settings
  • Jean Lambert-Rucki
  • Robert Eugene Pougheon - abstracts
  • Gabriel Domergue – portraits and nudes
