Art Deco Pewter

Maurice Daurat liked to work in pewter.  He strived to make ornamental objets rather than functional items. Considering the weight of large pieces made from pewter this was just as well.

Daurat’s designs were often simple and devoid of detailing. He enjoyed the light reflections that resulted from random hammering and chose dull sombre pewter as an alternative to gleaming and expensive silver. Daurat’s pewter pieces were affordable and accessible.

Enamelling

By contrast Jean Gaulden, another Frenchman produced highly sophisticated pieces. He decorated smooth flat planes with  silver, white, grey, pink, mauve and black influenced by Byzantine design. He chose not to work with acid, preferring flame to merge colours and surfaces. He worked with gilted copper and bronze and also with silver.
