Their work carried on where William Morris left off. Morris championed the idea of craftsmanship with an emphasis on bespoke single pieces of beauty. Art pottery became an art form in its own right with the virtuous craftsmen overcoming the evil machine. Their designs often had an Oriental influence. The potters themselves were involved in every stage of producing their work from design, to modelling the piece, and its final glazing. New glazes and techniques developed. Andre Metthey favoured cutting designs into already glazed pots. Serre’s work was heavily influenced by his travels to the Far East and he glazed his pieces so they resembled cut stone. ManufactoriesFrench and German ceramics manufacturers waned through the 1920’s and really only seemed to create pieces for the very wealthy This paved the way for other factories to adopt Modernism designs and manufacturing styles. Industrial DesignThe 1920’s saw the creation of the professional industry designer. They were striving to show that good design could be functional and economic.
